Jake Wightman Secures 1500-meter Silver while Kerr Suffers Setback
Jake Wightman claimed his latest global honor and initial since capturing world gold back in 2022.
Jake Wightman made his comeback to a world podium with world 1500m silver, however UK team-mate the defending champion's championship bid was ended by a physical setback in a dramatic final in Japan.
The 31-year-old, the 2022 world champion, achieved a comeback on his return to the international scene, having battled with setbacks and missed the previous two major competitions.
The athlete collapsed with fatigue after reaching the finish before staring up at the scoreboard, which revealed that Portuguese runner Nader had pipped him to first place by two-hundredths of a second in a dramatic conclusion.
It was disappointment for Kerr, who was seeking to become only the fourth ever athlete to defend the 1500m championship, but was denied the opportunity after stopping midway through the event and managing to hobble over the finish.
Kerr, who had positioned himself at the rear of the field, pulled up in discomfort on the second-to-last lap but forced himself to limp round to the finish last.
Ahead, the Briton made his bid for gold. Even though he came up agonisingly short, it is a silver medal which will seem as good as gold after the challenges of recent years.
Great Britain had to wait until the fifth day of action of the championships in Tokyo to enjoy a podium finish, but the athlete's impressive silver boosted them to seventeenth in the standings on the day.
