Bungie's Troubled Action Game Project Marathon Is Making a Comeback
The upcoming sci-fi extraction shooter, the studio's much-anticipated project, has resurfaced with the announcement of a exclusive testing phase set to run later this month.
A Rocky Development Journey
Initially revealed during the 2023 gaming showcase, the game has experienced a bumpy development cycle. In October 2024, Bungie stated it was aiming to begin alpha testing during the coming year. This was followed by quiet months, until the game was re-revealed in April with a planned September release. However, after some playtests resulted in negative feedback, the studio announced in June that it was delaying Marathon indefinitely.
Steering Clear of Controversy
Despite the title has already seen its fair share of controversies, the development team appears determined to make certain their project avoids the same outcome as other games. Currently, it appears the game's development is finally getting back on track, as Bungie just disclosed that it has conducted multiple private tests to gather feedback on Marathon" since June of this year. The developer is expanding access, enabling additional participants to catch a glimpse of the game via an forthcoming "closed technical test."

Players on Windows PC can also register via Steam starting on Oct. 13 at 10 a.m. PDT, with Steam applications due by October 26th. The developer will contact players who qualify and provide details of the next steps.
"This represents a crucial milestone for us as we evaluate enhancements since the game's Alpha, including three maps, several character options, prox chat, adjusted gameplay rhythm, solo queue, deeper environmental storytelling, and additional features," Bungie said. "However, the Technical Test build is a work in progress and will only include a selection of what's intended for the game's final version, concentrating on the initial gameplay moments."
Additional Information
More info about the technical test and the actual experience can be found on Marathon's support section. But for individuals who don't qualify for the trial (or cannot participate), there's positive developments: The developer says a public update on the project's status is the next thing on the agenda once the test is over.
"There will be a public update on Marathon's development in the near future after the Closed Technical Test!" The studio shared.
